FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Did you go to university/which 3D course did you do/how did you learn 3D?

I did go to university - I did a BA Hons course in Modelmaking for Design and Media. This was a traditional modelmaking course (props, miniatures, sculpting, make up, SFX). There were some dodgy computer facilities available at the time running CAD and 3dsmax 2. I blew my student loan on a computer with a whole 32mb RAM and began to self teach myself 3D and animation.

What software and computers do you use?

I list the software/applications i use/have used beneath the work images on my site. Computers are powerful tools and you can use any of them to make great pieces of work if you learn to understand their advantages & limitations.

Can you share/send me your scene files/models/simulations?

I appreciate that you might want to learn from them, but in this age of plagerism and lazy people - im not gonna give away things that took me hours, days or even weeks to create. I also often no longer 'own' the content. Final images/vfx sequences and all related materials, including scene files are owned by the production company and client. I do try to make a tutorial from time to time though which can be found in the STUFF section of my site. You cheeky monkies!

How did you make those gooey textures/shaders for the microscopic look in Fight for Life?

Due to the large number of shots and tight deadlines, i developed a set of shaders and passes that could work in all the shots, render quickly and provide flexibility in the composite. There were absolutely no lights in the scenes and i used incidence (fresnel) passes along with self illuminaton/incandesence scripted to various camera postions. I also created a 'fake' ambient occlusion shader using reflection rays to speed render times, along with HDRI environment map reflection and a depth pass. There was also a shader pass that was eventually named 'random ID' which was used to create subsurface effects. When all combined in the composite, it gave the look of a fully lit/GI scene.

Where are some good 3D tutorials/resources online?

The internet is used by quite a few people and is so unimaginably huge that if you havnt managed to find or stumble across anything yet by other users and aspiring artists, you should give up now and go herd goats or work in a fastfood burger outlet. Id recommend the first one over the latter.

Why are you being nasty/sarcastic?

Dont get upset - ive probably just had too much caffiene and its 3am.

I like you. Can i be your friend?

Er....sure....why not.
